Interpreting Search Results

Search LX will only return documents, announcements, calendar entries, etc. that are available to the user. Users will not be able to search for and retrieve information they do not have permission to access.

 

Interpreting the results of search queries is quite simple. The following elements are displayed on the search results screen:

• Search query
• Content link
• Content type icon
• Score
• Content information
• Search scope
• Recent searches
• Results navigator

 

 

The Search Results page displays the search parameters and details for each returned result.

Search Query

 

The search query that generated the current results is displayed at the top of the search results page. To modify the search:

1. Enter enter new search keywords in the Search for field.
2. If desired, click the in drop-down arrow to charge where your search will be conducted (i.e., My Institution, all of my courses).
3. Click the Search button.

Search Scope

The Search Scope control allows you to further refine the scope of your search to one or more specific courses. Search scope can be limited using the following options:

• All of Blackboard
• All of My Courses
• List of course to which you have access

 

Note: The search scope is not available if you are searching one specific course or organization by entering search through the Tools area of the course or organization.

Recent Searches

A list of recent searches is provided just under the top search controls. Click on a recent search link and you will be returned to its list of results.

Content Links

Each search result prominently displays the name of the content item that has matched the search criteria. This name is also a link to the matched content. Click the link to view the item directly.

Content Type Icon

Below are the course content icons that display next to the search results.

 

	is the icon for a journal entry.
	is the icon for Blackboard course content, such as a Learning Unit item.
	is the icon for a wiki page.
	is the icon for an announcement.
	is the icon for staff information.
	is the icon for calendar entries.
	is the icon for an MS Word document.
	is the icon for an HTML page.
	is the icon for a PDF document.
	is the icon for a text document.

Score

A relevancy score is provided that is used to rank the results against the total set of matches for your query.

Content Information

Information about the matched content, such as a summary, the type of content, the location, and the last modified date is also provided.

Results Navigator

At the bottom of the search results page is a navigation bar that provides information about the total number of hits returned. It allows you to navigate from page to page in the results. By default, ten hits are displayed per page.
