Requirements

Blackboard 9.0

NOTES:

· For information on new features and/or bugs fixed in this version, please view the release notes on our web site.

· If Teams LX and/or Journal LX are also installed on your Blackboard server, you must first upgrade Expo LX to v3.0.x after inactivating Teams LX and/or Journal LX. Also, it is important that Expo LX, Teams LX and Journal LX are all upgraded to 3.0.x.

Installation

IMPORTANT: If you have a previous release of Expo LX on your server, please review the update section at the end of this document.

1. Download the loi-expolx-3.0.x.war file from the download site and save it to your desktop.

2. Navigate to the System Admin tab in Blackboard.

3. Click on Manage Building Blocks.

4. Click on Install Building Block.

5. Click on the Browse button, and find and select the saved loi-expolx-3.0.x.war file.

6. Click the Submit button on the web page. The file will then upload.

7. Click on the OK button on the receipt page to return to the Manage Building Blocks page.

8. Change the status of Expo LX to Available.

9. Click on the OK button on the Make Building Block Available page.

10. The extension is now installed.

Registration

After installation, the extension must be registered with Learning Objects if you have not already registered or if you do not already have a license key for the application. To register, perform the following steps:

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on Manage Expo LX link under Tools.

4. Click on the Register your extension link.

5. Complete the form on the Register Expo LX page and accept the license. If you do not have a promotional code, leave that field blank.

6. Click submit on the form.

7. Click OK on the receipt page.

Within 24 hours, a registration key will be emailed to the address entered in the form.

8. Return to the Expo LX License page.

9. Click on the Install your key link.

10. Copy the key from your email into the text box.

11. Accept the license.

12. Click submit on the form.

13. The extension is now registered.

Enable Portal Module (Optional)

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on the Manage Tabs link under Portal System - Management.

4. Click on the Modify button associated with the My Institution tab.

5. Click on the Default Content link.

6. Find the Expo Sites portal module.

7. Check both the Displayed and Required boxes.

8. Click submit.

9. The portal module is now available to all users.

Configuration (Optional)

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on the Manage Expo LX link under Admin Tools.

4. Click on the Manage Settings link.

5. Update the storage location of Expo sites.

6. Update the information the users are allowed to make publicly available.

7. Update the name of the tab that the Expo LX portal module is on.

8. Update the name of Expo LX.

9. Click submit.

Supported Browsers
Expo LX uses the browser's Design Mode feature to implement WYSIWYG html editing. The following is a list of browsers that support Design Mode:

Internet Explorer 6.0 and above on Windows
Firefox 3.0 and above on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux
Safari 3.0 and above on Windows and Macintosh

Uninstall

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on Manage Building Blocks.

4. Change the status of Expo LX to Inactive.

5. Click on the OK button on the receipt page to return to the Manage Building Blocks page.

6. Return to the Manage Building Blocks page.

7. Click on the remove button for Expo LX.

Update / Upgrade

If a previous release of Expo LX is installed, it must be uninstalled by following the uninstall instructions (above), and then installing the newer release.

All Expo LX content remains in the system during an upgrade. There is no need to do anything to any Expo sites or their content.
If there was a link to the Expo tool in the Tool panel, that link must be re-created after the upgrade. Likewise, if a tool tab was created for the Expo tool, the tab must be re-created after the upgrade.
If a license key was installed with the previous release, it will continue to function with the newer release. The license does not need to be reapplied.
If you are on Blackboard 7 or later, a Migrate Filenames script will automatically be run upon installation of the 2.8.x build in order to avoid corruption of Expo sites due to a bug in Blackboard 7. To review the status of this script, navigate to the Manage Expo LX area in the Administrator Panel and select the "Administration Tasks" link. The "Migrate old-format filenames" task will indicate the progress of this script. If the script has not fully executed, you may select the "Execute" button for this task in order to execute the script manually.
Note: In previous versions of Expo LX, adminstrators were required to run the Migrate Filenames script. This is the same script, but the administrator is no longer required to manually initiate the script.

If you have a load-balanced configuration, special care must be taken when upgrading to be sure that all of the application servers properly reload the new version. The best way to ensure this is to restart each application server after upgrading each of the Campus Pack applications. If you are unable to restart your application servers, please wait 2 to 5 minutes after removing the old versions before attempting to install the new ones.

You can check to be sure that each of the application servers upgraded correctly by viewing the Expo LX logs.

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on Manage Expo LX.

4. Click Download Logs.

5. When prompted, save the log archive to a temporary location.

6. Open the ZIP file and view each of the included Expo LX log files. There should be one for each application server.

7. Look in each log for a message showing that the old version stopped, and a following message showing that the new version started.

Important Notice

Due to an issue in Blackboard, you may experience a "PermGen space" error when installing or activating Campus Pack. The PermGen space is a special area of the Java memory map, called the permanent generation heap, used to hold class files and related data. Repeatedly installing building blocks tends to leak memory in this heap. When the heap becomes full, building blocks may fail. Sometimes they fail when they are activated (made available); other times they fail during use. Typically, restarting Blackboard (or just Tomcat) will resolve the error, as all old classfiles will be eliminated. Deployments that perform nightly Blackboard restarts rarely see this problem; on the other hand, deployments that have not restarted in some time are quite likely to see it.

As of Blackboard 7.2, 256 MB is allocated to the permanent generation heap. This is sufficient for many building block installations. Earlier versions of Blackboard allocated only 64 MB which is not sufficient to support installing many building blocks. On such systems it may be necessary to increase the PermGen space to prevent the out-of-memory error from occurring. To do so, perform the following steps:

1. Edit the file blackboard/config/bb-config.properties. Note that this file may use UNIX line feeds which are hard to edit under Windows; it will appear as one long line with square characters instead of new lines. Please do your best to edit it anyway.

2. Podcast for the bbconfig.jvm.options.extra.tomcat setting (you can typically just run a Find for "extra").

3. Add the following value after the = character:
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:PermSize=64m
This will increase the heap size from 64 MB to 256 MB.

4. Run the blackboard/tools/admin/PushConfigUpdates script and wait for it to complete. If you have a load-balanced system with shared configuration then you will need to bounce Tomcat on your other appservers; otherwise repeat this process on each appserver.

Note that you should only perform this process if you are familiar with, and comfortable running, the PushConfigUpdates script. For further information or assistance, please contact support@learningobjects.com.

Installation

IMPORTANT: If you have a beta release of Podcast LX or Oscelot Podcaster on your server, please review the update section at the end of this document.

1. Download the loi-podcastlx-2.9.x.x war file from the download site and save it to your desktop.

2. Navigate to the System Admin tab in Blackboard.

3. Click on Manage Building Blocks.

4. Click on Install Building Block.

5. Click on the Browse button.

6. Click on the Browse button, and find and select the saved loi-podcastlx-2.9.x.x war file.

7. Click the Submit button on the web page. The file will then upload.

8. Click on the OK button on the receipt page to return to the Manage Building Blocks page.

9. Change the status of Podcast LX to Available. In Blackboard versions prior to 7.2, availability is set only for the entire institution. In Blackboard 7.2, the availability must be set for both the system and courses/orgs. Note: If the Podcast LX Building Block is not enabled here for all courses and organizations, then Podcast LX must be enabled individually in each course by the instructor.

10. Click on the OK button on the Make Building Block Available page.

11. The extension is now installed.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on Manage Podcast LX link under Tools.

4. Click on the Register your extension link.

5. Complete the form on the Register Podcast LX page and accept the license. If you do not have a promotional code, leave that field blank.

Update / Upgrade

If upgrading from a 2.8.x version of Podcast LX, you must execute the "archive tool links" admin task PRIOR to uninstalling in order to ensure that tool links will not be lost. To do this, perform the following steps:

1. Navigate to the Admin Panel and select the Manage Podcast LX link.

2. Select the "Administration Tasks" link.

3. Select the "Execute" button for the "Archive tool links" task.

4. When the archive task is complete, the state will be listed as "ok." Once the task is complete, uninstall the Podcast LX Building Block and install the new version.

5. Install the new version of Podcast LX and make it available.

All Podcast LX or Oscelot Podcaster content remains in the system during an upgrade. There is no need to do anything to any Podcast content.
If a link to the Podcast LX tool existed in the course menu prior to upgrade, the link must be re-created after upgrade. The content that existed in the tool prior to upgrade will be accessible after re-creating the link.
If the Podcast LX course tool was disabled, it must be re-disabled after the update.
When upgrading to Podcast LX from a beta version of Podcast LX or from Oscelot Podcaster, you must register the Podcast LX and install a license key that is subsequently sent from Learning Objects. If you are upgrading from Podcast LX 1.0.2 or subsequent Podcast releases, registration is not necessary.

You can check to be sure that each of the application servers upgraded correctly by viewing the Podcast LX logs.

After installng the Building Block you can continue configuration, instructions follow.

Enable Portal Module (Optional)

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on Manage Teams LX link under Tools.

4. Click on Configure Teams Portal Module and follow the instructions.

Configuration (Optional)

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator. Navigate to System Admin > Manage Teams LX (under Admin Tools). Click on the Manage Settings link.

2. Update the name of the tab that the Teams LX portal module is on.

3. Update the concurrent editing options.

4. Click Submit to save the configuration changes.

Upgrading Blackboard

If you are upgrading to Blackboard 9, before starting the upgrade, it is recommended that you install Teams LX 3.0.x. If upgrading from a 2.8.x or later version of Teams LX, be sure to run the "Archive tool links" administration task PRIOR to uninstalling Teams LX. Upgrading from Teams LX 2.8.x

You must execute the Archive tool links admin task PRIOR TO UNINSTALLING in order to ensure that tool links will not be lost.The sequence of steps are described below.

Archiving Tool Links

1. Navigate to the Admin Panel and select the Manage Teams LX link.

2. Select the Administration Tasks link.

3. Select the Execute button for the Archive tool links task.

4. When the archive task is complete, the state will be listed as "ok." Once the task is complete all tool links in your Blackboard system have been archived. After you upgrade your system you will be able to restore the tool links to their state when they were archived.

Upgrade your System to Blackboard 9

After archiving the tool links you can upgrade your system to Blackboard 9. After upgrading to Blackboard 9 you must uninstall the Campus Pack building blocks and install the Blackboard 9 compatible building blocks.

Restoring Tool Links

When you install the Blackboard 9 compatible building blocks the task to retore tool links is normally run automatically. If you need to run it manuall you can follow these steps:

1. Install the new version of Teams LX and make it available.

2. After installation is complete, navigate back to the Administration Tasks page.

3. Select the Execute button for the Restore tool links task.

4. When the archive task is complete, the state will be listed as "ok" and all tool links to the wiki tool will be restored.

Uninstallation

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

3. Change the Scheduling options to index at one of the predefined times or choose manual

4. Only change the performance options if advised to by Learning Objects

5. The Shared Index File Location can be changed to a network share, if desired

NOTE: The first run of the indexer will put significant load on the application server. Users on the server during this initial run may experience decreased responsiveness. Also note that indexing requires a significant amount file space.

Top Frame Search Configuration (Optional)

1. As a Blackboard administrator, go to System Admin > Manage Search LX

2. Click on Configure Top Frame Search Bar

Update / Upgrade

If a previous release of Search LX is installed, it must be uninstalled by following the uninstall instructions (below), and then installing the newer release.

One special consideration needs to be made when upgrading from a Blackboard 6.x version to 7.x on a load-balanced Windows installation. Search LX may fail to function correctly if the paths to the shared index files location or temporary index files location are incorrect. Because Blackboard 7.0 Windows load balancing switches from mapped-drive file sharing to the UNC path system, you will need to edit the Search LX configuration to correct the paths before using Search LX.

If Expo LX is installed on your Blackboard server, it is required to upgrade Expo LX to v3.0.13 before you upgrade Teams LX and Journal LX to v3.0.14. Additionally, it is important that the Expo LX, Teams LX and Journal LX building blocks are all upgraded to v3.0.14.
Building block update: If upgrading from a 2.8.x or later version of Journal LX, be sure to run the "Archive tool links" administration task PRIOR to uninstalling Journal LX. For more step-by-step instructions, see the "Update/Upgrade" section below.

Important Notice

5. Click on the Browse button, and find and select the saved loi-journallx-2.9.x.x.war file.

6. Click the Submit button on the web page. The file will then upload.

7. Click on the OK button on the receipt page to return to the Manage Building Blocks page.

8. Change the status of Journal LX to Available. In Blackboard versions prior to 7.2, availability is set only for the entire institution. In Blackboard 7.2, the availability must be set for both the system and courses/orgs. Note: If the Journal Building Block is not enabled here for all courses and organizations, then Journal must be enabled individually in each course by the instructor.

9. Click on the OK button on the Make Building Block Available page.

10. The extension is now installed.

Upgrading to Blackboard 9: If you are upgrading to Blackboard 9, before starting the upgrade, it is recommended that you install Search LX 3.0.x. If upgrading from a 2.8.x or later version of Search LX, be sure to run the "Archive tool links" administration task PRIOR to uninstalling Search LX. Installation

IMPORTANT: If you have a previous release of Search LX on your server, please review the update section at the end of this document.

1. Download the loi-searchlx-3.0.x.war file from the download site and save it to your desktop.

2. Navigate to the System Admin tab in Blackboard.

3. Click on Manage Building Blocks.

4. Click on Install Building Block.

5. Click on the Browse button.

6. Navigate to your desktop, and find and select the saved loi-searchlx-3.0.x.war file.

7. Click the Submit button on the web page. The file will then upload.

8. Click on the OK button on the receipt page to return to the Manage Building Blocks page.

9. Change the status of Search LX to Available.

10. Click on the OK button on the Make Building Block Available page.

11. The extension is now installed.

Registration

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on Manage Search LX link under Tools.

4. Click on the Register your extension link.

5. Complete the form on the Register Search LX page and accept the license. If you do not have a promotional code, leave that field blank.

6. Click submit on the form.

7. Click OK on the receipt page.

Within 24 hours, a registration key will be emailed to the address entered in the form.

8. Return to the Search LX License page.

9. Click on the Install your key link.

10. Copy the key from your email into the text box.

11. Accept the license.

12. Click submit on the form.

13. The extension is now registered.

Configuration

1. As a Blackboard administrator, go to System Admin > Manage Search LX

2. Click on Change Indexing Options

1. Change the Scheduling options to index at one of the predefined times or choose manual

2. Only change the performance options if advised to by Learning Objects

3. The Shared Index File Location can be changed to a network share, if desired

4. The Local Index File Location must be on the same machines as the application server

Top Frame Search Configuration (Optional)

1. As a Blackboard administrator, go to System Admin > Manage Search LX

2. Click on Configure Top Frame Search Bar

3. Follow the instruction there

Portal Module Configuration (Optional)

1. As a Blackboard administrator, go to System Admin > Manage Search LX

2. Click on Configure Search Portal Module

3. Follow the instruction there

Update / Upgrade

If a previous release of Search LX is installed, it must be uninstalled by following the uninstall instructions (below), and then installing the newer release.

1. Navigate to the Admin Panel and select the Manage Search LX link.

2. Select the "Administration Tasks" link.

3. Select the "Execute" button for the "Archive tool links" task.

4. When the archive task is complete, the state will be listed as "ok." Once the task is complete, uninstall the Search LX Building Block and install the new version.

5. Install the new version of Search LX and make it available.

6. After installation is complete, navigate back to the "Administration Tasks" page.

7. Select the "Execute" button for the "Restore tool links" task.

8. When the archive task is complete, the state will be listed as "ok" and all tool links to the search tool will be restored.

All indexing and searching configuration setting are retained after the update.
If a link to the Search LX course tool existed in the course menu prior to upgrade, the link must be re-created after upgrade.
If a link to the Search LX institution tool existed in the tool panel prior to upgrade, the link must be re-created after upgrade. Likewise, if a tool tab was created for the Search LX tool prior to upgrade, that tab must be re-created after upgrade.
If a license key was installed with the previous release, it will continue to function with the newer release. The license does not need to be reapplied.
If the Search LX course tool was disabled, it must be disabled again after the update.
If the top frame search bar was configured in a version of Search prior to Search 2.7.3, swap out the script tags in the existing HTML for the top frame search with the following:

You can check to be sure that each of the application servers upgraded correctly by viewing the Search LX logs.

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on Manage Search LX.

4. Click Download Logs.

5. When prompted, save the log archive to a temporary location.

6. Open the ZIP file and view each of the included Search LX log files. There should be one for each application server.

7. Look in each log for a message showing that the old version stopped, and a following message showing that the new version started.

1. Login to the Blackboard server as an administrator.

2. Click on the System Admin tab.

3. Click on Manage Building Blocks.

4. Change the status of Search LX to Inactive.

5. Click on the OK button on the receipt page to return to the Manage Building Blocks page.

6. Return to the Manage Building Blocks page.

7. Click on the remove button for Search LX.

Upgrading Blackboard

If you are upgrading to Blackboard 9, before starting the upgrade, it is recommended that you install Search LX 3.0.x. When upgrading to Podcast LX from a beta version of Podcast LX or from Oscelot Podcaster, you must register the Podcast LX and install a license key that is subsequently sent from Learning Objects. If you are upgrading from Podcast LX 1.0.2 or subsequent Podcast releases, registration is not necessary.

If Expo LX is installed on your Blackboard server, it is required to upgrade Expo LX to v3.0.x before you upgrade Teams LX and Journal LX to v3.0.x. Additionally, it is important that the Expo LX, Teams LX and Journal LX building blocks are all upgraded to v3.0.x.

If you are on Blackboard 7 or later, a Migrate Filenames script will automatically be run upon installation of the 2.8.x build in order to avoid corruption of Journal blogs due to a bug in Blackboard 7. To review the status of this script, navigate to the Manage Journal LX area in the Administrator Panel and select the "Administration Tasks" link. The "Migrate old-format filenames" task will indicate the progress of this script. If the script has not fully executed, you may select the "Execute" button for this task in order to execute the script manually.
Note: In previous versions of Journal LX, adminstrators were required to run the Migrate Filenames script. This is the same script, but the administrator is no longer required to manually initiate the script.
