GUI Configuration

Top Frame

To enable system-wide search in the tab area, you will need to activate a primary site sponsor area and then configure it to display the search form.

Activating the Primary Site Sponsor Area

  1. Navigate to the System Admin tab.
  2. Click the Manage Brands in the Portal System Management group box.
  3. Click the Customize/Manage button of the brand you wish to customize. For most schools, this is the default brand.
  4. Scroll to the Choose Hot Spots or Hot Links group box.
  5. Choose Hot Spots (Image or HTML).
  6. Click the Submit button.

Manage Hot Spots

After activating the Primary Site Sponsor Area, the Hot Spots area, which is at the top right of the Blackboard top frame, must be configured.

  1. Navigate to the System Admin tab.
  2. Click the Settings in the Blackboard Community System - Management group box.
  3. Click the Hot Spots Content link.
  4. Select the HTML option.
  5. Copy and paste the following text into the HTML text box

    <!-- END SEARCH FORM -->

    Warning to Blackboard Virtual Installation Users: You will need to replace the "bb_bb60" portion of the above URL with your virtual installation ID.

  6. Click the Submit button.
  7. Reload the page to see the Search fields in the top frame.

Configure the Primary Hot Spots area in the top frame to contain the Search fields.

 


Portal Module

To enable the Search LX Portal Module first enable the Search module and then deploy the Search module to the My Institution tab or some other module tab.

Enable the Search Module

  1. Navigate to the System Admin tab.
  2. Click the Manage Modules link in the Portal Areas group box.
  3. Find Search LX and then click the Properties link.
  4. Select Yes for System Availability and Available for users to select from module list.
  5. Select Everyone under the availability column.
  6. Click the Submit button.

Deploy the Search Module to Your My Institution Tab

  1. Navigate to the System Admin tab.
  2. Click the Manage Tabs link in the Portal Area group box.
  3. Click the Modify button for the desired tab.
  4. Click the Default Content link.
  5. Find Search LX and then check the Displayed and Required check boxes.
  6. Click the Submit button.

Portal Box

To enable the Search LX Portal Box, first Configure the Portal Sponsorship area then rename it.

Configure Sponsorship Area

  1. Navigate to the System Admin tab.
  2. Click Manage Tabs in the Portal Area group box.
  3. Find the My Institution tab (or your whatever tab is first displayed when users login to the system).
  4. Click the Modify button.
  5. Click either the Manage Hot Spots Content link or the Manage Sponsorship Content link, depending on your version of Blackboard.
  6. In Step 1, for either Primary Hot Spots Content or Primary Sponsorship Content, select the HTML option and paste the following text into the text box.

  7. Click the Submit button.

Rename Sponsorship Area

  1. Navigate to the System Admin tab.
  2. Click the Manage Tabs link in the Portal Areas group box.
  3. Find the My Institution tab or your institution's name.
  4. Click the Modify button.
  5. Click the Menu Column Properties link or Left Side Tool Box Properties link, depending on your version of Blackboard..
  6. Select Yes for the Hot Spots Available field.
  7. Type "Search" in the Name field.
  8. Click the Submit button.

Portal Tool

  1. Navigate to the System Admin tab.
  2. Click the Manage Tool Panel link in the Portal Areas group box.
  3. Click the Add Tool button.
  4. Type "Search" into the Title field.
  5. Select Search LX from the Select box.
  6. Select the Yes radio button.
  7. Click the Submit button.

Course Tool

The Search course tool can be enabled or disabled by the Administrator and the Instructor of the course. By default this tool is enabled following installation of the Search LX Building Block. Administrative settings for this tool will override those set by the instructor.

  1. Navigate to the System Admin tab.
  2. Click the Settings link in the Blackboard Learning System group box.
  3. Click the Course Tools link.
  4. Select the Building Block Tools filter option.
  5. Locate the Learning Objects Search LX tool.
  6. Set the appropriate availability for this tool.
  7. Click the Submit button.
