A Wiki is a website where all users (with appropriate permissions) can collaborate and contribute to the site by adding and editing information. 

 

• Wikis are information based and "non-hierarchical" - which means that the information is presented in a free flowing or hyperlinked organization, instead of chronological (like a blog)
• Navigating within a wiki is typically done through a series of interrelated hyperlinks.
• Wikis, differ from blogs in general because they are designed more for information construction and distribution, and not necessarily for reflecting/sharing thoughts and opinions.

 

While there is really no limit to how a wiki can be used, instructors tend to use wikis in courses in two different ways:

• As a repository for course information. This is often known as a knowledge base
• As a location for a group/team to do a shared project or website for presentation
